CHARLES PURNELL. A FINE ENGLISH REGENCY MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK OF ELEGANT PROPORTIONS

A fine English Regency mahogany longcase clock of elegant proportions, the beautiful flame veneered and ebony moulded case with break arch top hood and round brass bezel for the opening door.

The 12 inch circular silvered brass dial is of the conventional longcase type with Roman numerals, Arabic minutes and subsidiary dials for seconds and date indication. The blued steel serpentine hands are almost certainly original. The 8-Day movement has five turned pillars, anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a bell. It retains its original steel rod pendulum and a pair of domed brass cased weights.

The slim, elegant high quality London case has fine flame mahogany veneers and retains its original patina. The full length break arch top trunk door is flanked by two fluted pillars with brass capitals and bases. The base section has a raised fielded and moulded panel and it retains its original double plinth with elegantly shaped bracket feet. It is in a remarkably original state of preservation.

Height: 80 ½ in (204.5cm)

*Charles Purnell is listed on page 632 of Brian Loomes’ Clockmakers of the World: 21st Century Edition as working in London circa 1810

Small longcases of this quality, proportions and originality are comparatively hard to find today.

Provenance: This clock has been in a notable English private collection since the mid 1960s when it was acquired in Sussex.
