CHRISTOPHER HARRIS, GRAY’S INN. A rare George II period miniature walnut veneered grandmother longcase clock

Origin
London
Date
circa 1740

A very rare and beautiful George II period miniature walnut veneered grandmother longcase clock, the 7 inch arched brass dial of 8-day duration and striking the hours on a bell with a verge escapement and short bob pendulum.

Height: 75 in (190.5 cm)

* Christopher Harris was a member of the Clockmakers’ Company from 1729 until 1745 and was working first at Gray’s Inn and later in Leadenhall Street.

The photographs do not do justice to this wonderful, small clock and its slender proportions. Most longcase cases have 12 or 13 inch dials – this clock’s dial is only 7 inches in width and thus makes the whole case extremely slender and elegant.

In over 30 years of specialising in clocks, this is the first 7 inch dial verge grandmother longcase we have had the privilege to handle.
