E. WHITE, 20 COCKSPUR STREET A fine Victorian period table timepiece

Origin
London
Date
Circa 1860 - 1875

A good Victorian period English table timepiece in its original finely fitted oak travelling case. The 4 ½ inch round silvered dial has Roman hour numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial below XII and it appears to retain its original finely tapered spade tipped blued steel hands. The heavy duty single fusee timepiece movement has a platform lever escapement with a Fast/Slow adjustment lever set within the dial plate above XII.

The beautifully patinated fitted oak case has a bronze outer bezel, high quality brass hinges and lock and an inset carrying handle to the top. The front opening door of the case has a carved lion to each corner above and the original owner’s monogram to each corner below

Date: circa 1865 – 1870

Overall diameter of the brass cased movement:  4 ¾ in (12 cm) excluding the  brass carrying handle

Oak Carrying Case Width: 6 ½ in (16.5 cm)

Oak Carrying Case Height: 6 ½ in (16.5 cm)

* E. White is listed on page 832 of Brian Loomes’ Clockmakers of the World: 21st Century Edition as working in Cockspur Street from 1865. He was formerly a foreman with Dent’s and his clocks are invariably of very high quality.
