WILLIAM & MARY FLORAL MARQUETRY CHEST

Origin
English
Date
circa 1790 - 1795

A finely patinated walnut veneered flower and bird marquetry chest of drawers.   The piece consists of five drawers, two short and three long and there is fine graduation from top to bottom. There is a half round applied walnut moulding surrounding each drawer and the cross-grain ogee moulding to the base is original.

The flowers, foliage and pairs of birds of the graduated drawers are set within dark horizontal oval shaped panels. They are shown off to great effect by the ebony and boxwood strung walnut surrounds and the crossbanded walnut edge. They retain their original slender oak linings.

The exceptional top consists of a central flower and foliate marquetry oval panel which is off set by the same ebony and boxwood stringing and walnut crossbanding. As on the best pieces of marquetry furniture of the period, the decoration of each of the floral corner pieces is subtly different.

This is a beautifully drawn piece of furniture which stands very well both in its overall tight proportions and beautifully configured marquetry panels. The replaced walnut bun feet have been fitted into the original holes and the replaced cast brass drop handles and engraved brass backplates are also in the original slots.
