A good early Victorian English mantel timepiece in pristine condition.

The four-glass case, veneered with richly patinated and highly figured rosewood has four adjustable brass bun feet and an inset brass carrying handle to the top. The 3 ¾ inch silvered and engraved arched dial is signed by the maker below VI, Robt Haswell, London within a foliate cartouche. The blued steel moon hands appear to be original.

The 8 day movement is of good quality, and has well-turned pillars, substantial plates and wire fusee. The bold cylindrical brass pendulum bob retains its original holdfast for travelling.

Width: 6 in (15 cm)

*Robert Haswell is listed as ‘Haswell and Son’ on page 356 of Brian Loomes’ Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World: 21st Century Edition as working in Spencer Street, London in the mid-19th century.
