Origin
English
Date
circa 1690 - 1695

A classic oyster olivewood chest of drawers of the William and Mary period in a very original state of preservation.

This well-proportioned chest consists of two short and three long well graduated drawers and stands on (replaced) bun feet. The top is veneered with sections of olivewood oysters intertwined with boxwood-strung roundels and scrolls and the edges are crossbanded with olivewood and light coloured holly or sycamore stringing.  The overall decorative effect of the above is quite stunning, as are the olivewood oysters and crossbanded edges of the sides and drawer fronts.

The brass drop handles and escutcheons are sympathetic replacements.

Height: 34 ¾ in (88.25 cm)

Width: 38 ¼ in (97 cm)

Depth: 22 ⅝ in (57.5 cm)

* For a very similar olivewood chest of drawers see plate 2:30 on page 51 of English Furniture 1660-1714 from Charles II to Queen Anne by Adam Bowett.
