A fine quality William IV period mahogany stick barometer and thermometer by these Royal Makers.

The elegant case has a cushion moulded top with flame mahogany veneers and ebony stringing. In the centre of the trunk there is a moulded thermometer with Fahrenheit and Reamur temperature indication on an ivory scale. It has a turned mahogany cistern cover at the base. The engraved ivory Register Plate reads from 27 to 31 inches by means of a vernier on the right hand side and shows the 4 states of the weather on the left. The makers’ signature and address are engraved across the top of the chamfered scales below the cushion cornice.

*George and Charles Dixey are listed on page 69 0f Edwin Banfield’s Barometer Makers and Retailers as working at 3 New Bond Street from 1825 to 1838. They were twin brothers working in partnership until George’s death in 1838 and they were appointed opticians to the king.
