A fine flame mahogany Bow Front Stick Barometer of most elegant proportions by this well known maker.
The case with cushion moulded pediment and with very crisp mouldings throughout, is veneered with the finest figured flame mahogany. The ebonised urn shaped cistern cover at the base is flanked by triple lines of inlaid ebony. The engraved and silvered brass Register Plate reads from 27 to 32 inches by means of a vernier on the right hand side and shows the traditional states of the weather on the left. A very discreet maker’s signature Berge late Ramsden London is engraved at the bottom left of the plate.
Height: 38 ¼ in (97 cm)
* Banfield shows Mathew Berge as working between 1800 and his death in 1819 at 199 Piccadilly. Berge succeeded Jesse Ramsden, “a maker of international repute” in 1800 and continued in his workshop at the same address. Both makers typically employed a very restrained signature in the same style as on this instrument.
