A rare English George II period mahogany bachelor’s chest of excellent colour and patination and in a remarkably original state. The piece consists of a brushing slide with a loper at each end and two short and three long drawers graduating perfectly in size from top to bottom. It retains its original brass plate handles, escutcheons and steel locks. The chest stands on its four original bracket feet and the oak drawer linings are well made with delicate dovetail joints.
Width: 30 in (76 cm)
Height: 31 ½ in (80 cm)
Depth: 14 in (35.5 cm)
* Small mahogany bachelor’s chests of diminutive size and great proportions were only ever made in small numbers for wealthy Georgian households. The fact that this charming piece has survived so untouched after more than 250 years is remarkable. Its great colour and patina attest to the fact that the chest has been regularly waxed and cared for in a good household throughout its life.
