A good quality early George III period walnut bureau veneered with a fine interior.

The interior has a central opening door flanked by green leather faux book pockets and four pigeonholes which are set above two opening drawers. Each pigeonhole divider is finely fretted and each top drawer is carved with interlacing foliage.

The top, fall and drawer fronts are veneered in well-figured book-matched walnut with barber’s pole stringing and walnut crossbanding. The four long drawers are lined in oak, and joined with very fine dovetails. The brass fretwork plate escutcheons and handles are sympathetic replacements. It stands on its four original walnut veneered bracket feet.

The inside of the fall is walnut crossbanded and centred with an old bottle green leather cover. The green leather is repeated on the spines of the interior book drawers which flank the figured walnut central opening door. The fall is supported on a loper situated at each end.

This elegant piece of Georgian walnut veneered case furniture stands very well and is highly practical.
