A fine pair of George I period walnut stools of good colour and rich patina, each with a drop-in seat upholstered in 18th century gros and petit point needlework.
The rectangular drop-in seats are worked in bold polychrome wools with exotic fruit and foliate designs in shades of blue, green, gold, coral and red on a dark ground. Each stool is constructed of finely figured walnut with canted corners and a moulded seat rail. They are raised on four slender cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, united by turned H-form stretchers with a shaped central block. The walnut has been worn to a deep, warm patina throughout.
Stools of this type and quality were among the most refined items of domestic seating furniture produced during the early Georgian period. It is rare to find a matched pair in this condition, and the retention of 18th century needlework seats adds greatly to their appeal.
